WWDC 2022: Everything you need to know about Apple’s developer’s conference

What is WWDC?

1. iOS 16

Undoubtedly, the biggest announcement was iOS 16. Apple unveiled significant updates to the iPhone operating system, including a revamped Home app, an editable home screen with widget support, and the option to edit and unsend iMessages.

All iPhone users will now have access to the Fitness app, even if they don’t own an Apple Watch. Additionally, iOS 16 offers improved Family Sharing features, as well as enhancements to alerts, Apple Maps, Wallet, and many other apps.

2. MacOS 13

Don’t assume that this is macOS 13.0, even though it should be the case: Apple lingered with a single version number from macOS 10.0 (Cheetah) in 2001 to macOS 10.15 (Catalina) in 2019, a period of barely imaginable 18 years. However, that foolishness appears to have been eliminated as both the most recent releases, macOS 11 Big Sur and macOS 12 Monterey, have their own numbers.

Regarding the California landmark that will give macOS 13.0 its name, we find it amusing to speculate that it might be Mammoth, but we’re not sure Apple would want to link its operating system to an extinct animal.

3. WatchOS 9

This year, Apple is not releasing any significant WatchOS 9 updates. Instead, the business worked hard to make WatchOS better. A new Siri user interface, new banner notifications, new watch faces, and enhanced sleep tracking functions are all part of the upgrade. Heart rate zones and new running metrics are being added to the workout app in order to track your running efficiency.

4. 'M2' Apple Silicon

Apple announced the Apple M2 chipset during its keynote address at WWDC 2022 in addition to software.

It has an 8-core SoC with four performance cores and four efficiency cores, a 10-core GPU, and a neural engine that can process 5.8 trillion operations per second, which is 40% more than the M1’s 5.8 trillion operations per second.

Although it is still less potent than the M1 Pro, M1 Max, or M1 Ultra, it is also 18% faster in terms of CPU and 35% more potent in terms of GPU than the Apple M1. Beginning in July, the M2 will be sold alongside a brand-new 13-inch MacBook Pro 2022 and MacBook Air 2022.

5. New MacBook Air and MacBook Pro

Finally receiving the update it deserves is the MacBook Air. It is available in four colours—space grey, starlight, midnight, and silver—and is powered by Apple’s new M2 CPU. Two Thunderbolt ports and Apple’s MagSafe are used for charging. According to Apple, it has 25% less volume than the previous MacBook Air. It has a 13.6-inch display with narrower margins than its predecessor and weighs 1.2 kg.
